Motorola's first incarnation of the Milestone included a full, slide out QWERTY keyboard in a smartphone packed full of features. However, the slide out keyboard received mixed reactions, and made the phone quite chunky; plus smartphones were moving on and touchscreens were becoming more popular. So the phone has been relaunched as the Motorola Milestone XT720, but has changing the keyboard improved the phone's appeal in the competitive smartphone market? The Motorola Milestone XT720 designers were obviously keen to improve on the old Milestone smartphone, without all the effort of a complete redesign. Removing the slide out keyboard allowed them to shed a few grams and millimeters, and just to give the new version it's own identity, they also made a couple of other slight changes - so it looks and feels more like a new model. The result is a quality mobile phone, as you would expect from Motorola, although it might not be everyone's idea of good looking. The rather unique look to the phone is designed it seems, to highlight its camera credentials, and well it might blow its own trumpet - the new Milestone comes with an incredible 8 megapixel camera. But it's not just the fact that this is larger than any of the other Android smartphones on the market that's impressive. You also get face detection, image stabilization and multi-shot features, not to mention hi definition video capture. The Motorola Milestone XT720 runs the 2.1 version of the Android operating system, which helps make the most of the phones features, as well as giving you access to the Android market and as many apps as you could want. Other features are more than up to standard with the other phones in the market, and this release comes equipped with 3G, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, as well as GPS and an FM radio. If there is one thing that lets the new Motorola down, it's the fact that all these features place a big demand on the smartphone's technology, and while it copes okay, a faster processor would have been a noticeable improvement. While the Motorola Milestone XT720 might find it hard to gain many converts from the likes of Apple, HTC and Google, it's amazing 8 megapixel camera and a host of other features that give it respectable smartphone credentials, will win a lot of fans. It almost seems unfair to look at it as a revamped version of the original Milestone as the improvements have been considerable, and just what smartphone users have been looking for. |
